Ambergris is formed in the stomach or intestine of the
cachalot or Sperm Whale. The ambergris is the result of a condition
caused by irritation of the whale's stomach due to certain indigestible
particles in the whale's food such as Squid beaks. It is one of the few
natural perfumery raw material which cannot be manufactured. Ambergris
is a pale greyish or creamy yellow to brown or dark brown waxy solid
mass. On ageing (exposure to sunlight and salt water and iodine) the
ambergris lightens in colour. This process can sometimes take months or
years and is known as oxidation and photo-degradation.
This particular Ambergris is from India found on the
shores of the Indian Ocean. Professionally processed to retain the
peculiar odour that is at once sweet, earthy, marine, and animalic.
Ambergris is found in lumps of various shapes and sizes, weighing from ½
oz (14 g) to 100 or more pounds (45.36 or more kg).
